How to use MateCAT

The growing use of assisted translation tools in the world of professional translators fuels the debate on the positive aspects and limits of this type of technological support. Is it possible to use CAT Tools for any type of translation or in some cases it would be better to let personal creativity flourish?

MateCAT is an online tool that provides a set of functions to manage translation projects. The integration of a complete translation memory with an effective automatic translation software makes MateCat one of the tools most chosen by professionals when it comes to post-editing work. In this article, we share some of the advantages of this platform that connects users with more than 120,000 online professionals, who work with all language pairs.

By having one of the largest existing translation memories (more than 12 billion words), MateCAT allows you to translate more words per hour in relation to other tools. In addition, projects can be hosted on the platform, avoiding having to share files by email and other means. In addition, like other software, it allows you to host private translation memories and export glossaries.

If you are interested in knowing how to use this tool, here we show you how to:

Step 1: Create your translation project.
Enter www.matecat.com and choose the source language, the final language and the subject of the project. Upload the document to be translated and also if you have a translation memory or a glossary of specific terms for the project.

Step 2: Analyze your project
Once the project has been uploaded, click on “Analyze” to estimate the time and effort required for this project, as well as the word count to be performed.

Step 3: Translate
Click on "translate" and start the project. Remember that you can send the link to any collaborator if necessary.
Once the project has started, you can see that the screen is divided into two sections. The one on the left side is the document, in fragments, in its original language and the right side is the document translated into the final language. Check that the translation is correct and then click on “translate”. The segment will turn blue indicating that the segment translation is complete.

You can follow the continuity of the project in the bar below where it indicates as a percentage the progress of the project. Once you indicate it is 100% it means that it is ready, and you can download it in the format you want.
