Technology in interpreting

Descripción: Summeropportunities

Technology in interpreting

Interpreting consists in rendering a spoken or signed language into another one while maintaining the meaning and intention of the source language content.

The demand for interpretation and translation has been around for centuries in the history of humanity and, with the evolution of technology, some practices were enhanced or automated. In fact, nowadays interpreters can work remotely and through different devices including tablets, phones and others.

The numerous strides in technological advancement have made it easier, faster and even more efficient to transfer meaning between languages. Below, you will find some of the ways in which technology supports interpreting and helps improve the processes involved.

Webcasts

Webcasts are becoming more and more popular for conference interpreting because they have specialized features to help interpreters avoid fatigue when they need to switch off easily.

Webcast-multimedia presentations are streamed online, and broadcast audio and video content to multiple simultaneous listeners and viewers, which makes them ideal for big audiences.

Interpretation Management Systems (IMS)

IMS aim to organize bookings and consolidate feedback on interpreting quality. The systems are designed to help organizations and language service providers that manage big numbers of bookings.

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)

VRI is another method growing exponentially since it allows interpreters to work from their home offices or from call centers. VRI solutions are some kind of web conferencing technology with other functionalities added. They use video conferencing technology, equipment and a high-speed internet connection.  One of the biggest advantages helping the use of VRI expand is the fact that remote interpreters don’t represent travel costs and usually provide services on a per-minute basis instead of blocks that can last half a day, which makes them ideal for short sessions.

Video remote interpreting is used for multiple occasions including business meetings, medical appointments, schools, etc.

Over the phone interpreting (OPI)

Another channel that offers interpreters the possibility to work remotely is the telephone. Unlike video remote interpreting, OPI facilitates simple verbal exchanges that don’t require visual communication. It also provides services on a per-minute basis making the solutions very affordable.

Bring Your Own Device Interpretation (BYOD)

BYOD requires free apps to be installed in the listener’s phone or tablet. It makes technical setup more mobile, less costly and can be used either for indoor or outdoor events. One advantage of this technique is that it eliminates the risk of equipment damage or theft because interpreters don’t have to travel to a site with a van full of equipment for interpretation. Instead, they rely on the apps and can simply ask the attendees to download them.
