Text:
When viruses infect human cells they exploit the cell´s ribosomes to synthesize viral proteins, which are therefore present in the cytosol before being assembled into viral particles. In response, the infected cell uses its normal processes of breakdown and turnover of cellular proteins to degrade some of the viral proteins into peptides that can be bound by MHC class I molecules and presented to CD8 Tcells. Proteins in the cytosol are degraded by a large barrel-shaped protein complex called the proteasome, which has several different protease activities.
