Translators who do not have a strong knowledge of law and legal terminology often find themselves stuck as they try to translate a legal document from a foreign language into English. They might be able to translate everyday language but cannot find the right words to express the meaning a legal document. Let us assume for a second that you are a French translator who is trying to translate a contract from French to English. Will you be effective as a translator if you have no knowledge of the legal system in France? Will your translation sound professional and correct to a lawyer if you have never studied American law? Probably not. You do not have to be an attorney with years of experience to provide high-quality translations of legal documents. However, you do need to have some understanding of general law and the legal system in the country in which the document was issued as well as the United States. The translation of a contract is tough for anyone who is not familiar with law and the legal industry. Do not be surprised if you find yourself struggling through a contract. Even if you are a translator who has been translating medical documents for many years you could struggle finding the right words for a legal document. Legal documents are very different from text in other areas. Translators who have experience in other fields but not law can rarely carry out a great translation of legal documents such as agreements. Translators whose area of specialty is law commonly have an in-depth understanding of the vocabulary traditionally used in the legal sector. They know the exact meaning of words within the document and can quickly come up with their equivalents in the target language. In our example, if you were a French translator who focuses on legal translation then you could clearly understand the meaning of the text in French and translate it into English. Your translation would sound formal and clear such that it would be easy to follow. In general, translators who have been certified by the court system are well-qualified to deliver the translation of legal documents. Since they are certified they can translate legal documents for courts. It is always a good idea to seek the assistance of a translation company that offers legal translation services when you are dealing with contracts, agreements, terms and conditions, patents, etc.
