My names is Evelina and I am a marine biologist. It sounds really strange but I am thinking about a career change and I found out I am really interested in languages and cultures. I am Italian originally and i am undertaking a teaching qualification which will lead me to teach languages. One of my main interests is translating and I planned to carry on with my qualifications in the near future as well as aiming to be fluent in another language. In the meantime I would like to have some work experience. I wish I could use my science background to translate any text about the subject.
I am currently a volunteer translator for the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL - http://www.childrenslibrary.org). I would like, in the short period, to gain experience to be able to develop a career in languages and translation. So if you have got any suggestin or you know of any training/job opportunity please contact me. I am avilable for any help I can give to the community!!

thanks for your replay! I would be really grateful if you could give me some tips aboput opening my own business. It is a pretty new field for me and It will help a lot if i can understand it properly!
I was having a look around about some specific qualification and becuase i live in the South West of England i was checking on variour universities here and i found the best offer i think in Exeter where there is a Master course in Trnaslation and also a Master Reasearch in European Language and cultures which could give me the opportunity to explore how languages change. But i had a look at the link you sent at the London City University and it looks interesting as well. Moreover they seem to offer workshops which are very important to develope the carreer profile.

Dear Evelina,
with regards to calling yourself a freelancer, you don't actually need an official experience to set up a legitimate freelance business in translation in the uk. If you are serious about setting urself up as a business I could email you tips on how to go on about it, marketing, insurance etc.

thanks for your suggestions.
I am thinking about preparing a new CV with the qualification in language teaching i am undertaking, but i am still not sure about how to fill in my CV with translation experience. I will definetly add my vounteering experience but i do not have much experience to quote for a job ( i checked on some translator associations websites for some indicative quotes) and i do not have enough background to propose me as a freelance and set up my personal business...
any suggestion??

Hi Evelina,
welcome to TranslatorPub.com and the Community. Experience comes with the time, so just keep on sending out your application. A lot of agencies would be happy to have you on board with such remarkable qualifications.
Also - if you are interested in trainings, just contact some of the agencies around your town. But - most agencies keep PMs in their offices and not many have actually inhouse translators.

Hi Caroline, thanks for your support.
I have been looking on the webite at the jobs posted but sometimes i think i do not know what to do. I do not have any "official" experience, i mean something i can actually write down on my CV hoping that some agency will call me. Do you (or anyone in the forum) have any suggestion about this?? Do you know of any agency (even from overseas - I live in UK) which would counsider to take me for some training?

Wow - what a big change! All of that sounds really exciting, I can't even imagine how you could go from marine biology to teaching languages/translating! Do you have any specific third language in mind? Good luck to you with that (although you seem to be doing quite well already)! Also, take a look at job posts on the start page here - I'm sure you'll find plenty of applicable translations.
