Eukaryotische Zellen besitzen neben ihrer Plasmamembran ein ausgedehntes System intrazellulärer Membranen. Sie grenzen innerhalb der Zelle Reaktionsräume – Kompartimente – ab, die spezielle Aufgaben wahrnehmen und daher auch Zellorganellen heißen. Das größte Organell ist der Zellkern; ebenso wie die endoplasmatische Reticulum (ER) und der Golgi-Apparat kommt dieses Kompartiment nur einmal pro Zelle vor. Andere Organellen wie Mitochondrien, Lysosomen, Endosomen und Peroxisomen sind wesentlich kleiner, kommen aber in großer Zahl vor.
Las células eucarióticas poseen, además de una membrana plasmática, un amplio sistema de membranas intracelulares que delimitan los espacios de reacción, o compartimentos, en el interior de la célula. Estos desempeñan labores especiales y por lo tanto reciben el nombre de orgánulos celulares.
El orgánulo más grande es el núcleo celular y al igual que el retículo endoplasmático (RE) y el aparato de Golgi, este compartimento solo aparece una vez en cada célula. Otros orgánulos como las mitocondrias, los lisosomas, los endosomas, y los peroxisomas son considerablemente más pequeños, aunque aparecen en grandes cantidades.
