I am an American who spent two years in Germany as an exchange student. My desire to learn in depth led to a translator's certificate at the University of Heidelberg. I have taught German at the secondary and postsecondary levels for several decades and also at the Defense Language Institute, having scored 4+ in German (near native-speaker ability) with 5 being an educated native speaker.
